Finding Shoes to Fit Your Needs

When it comes to finding the perfect shoe, we all have different needs, and the shoes that you choose should be comfortable for you and your foot shape. If you have bunions, you may want to buy shoes that have a wide toe box, excellent arch support, and are made out of a flexible material that is not too tight on your feet. If you have high arches, you may want to get shoes that have a rubber heel and extra cushion. If you have flat feet, you may want shoes that have good structure and support for your arches. Finally, if you have wide feet, look for shoes that come in wide sizes. For more information on finding the perfect shoe for you, speak with a podiatrist today.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Thomas Tran from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Can Orthotic Insoles Help My Flat Feet?

Flat feet is a condition that causes the middle of the feet to be flat rather than arched. While some people with flat feet may have no issues, others can feel pain and discomfort that interferes with their daily lives and activities. Orthotic insoles are special shoe inserts that can help with various foot problems, including flat feet. If you have pain or discomfort caused by flat feet, wearing orthotic insoles in your shoes can provide extra cushioning and relief. There are a variety of different orthotics, and the type of orthotics that are best for you will depend on the specific structure of your foot and your daily lifestyle needs. For more information about how orthotic insoles may help with your flat feet, speak with a podiatrist today.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Thomas Tran from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

What Are the Symptoms of Arthritic Feet?

Many patients who are afflicted with arthritis are familiar with the pain and discomfort this condition can cause. When arthritis is present, there are several symptoms that can affect the feet, which can include stiffness in the toe joints or ankles, swelling, and warmth in parts of the foot. The joints in the feet may gradually deteriorate, and it may become difficult to walk. Mild relief may be felt when pressure is taken off of the affected foot, and this may help to reduce existing swelling and pain. Arthritis in the feet may lead to other foot ailments, including bursitis, hammertoes, and nodules that may form on the heel, which can affect the Achilles tendon. If you have arthritis in your feet, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can guide you toward proper treatment techniques.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Thomas Tran from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Frisco, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

Injections for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is a sharp pain in the foot. There are multiple treatment options for plantar fasciitis depending on the severity of your condition. In more severe cases, where other treatment options have had minimal success, injections into the foot may provide relief. Cortisone injections can reduce or eliminate inflammatory pain. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections use platelets from your own blood to promote healing in damaged tissue. If you have plantar fasciitis, please consult with a podiatrist to find the right treatment for you.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Thomas Tran  from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.
