If you work on your feet, you may find your legs aching by the end of the day. Working in a standing position for prolonged periods of time is associated with sore feet, leg swelling, varicose veins, and general muscle fatigue. Wearing shoes that are comfortable and properly-fitted can help prevent or alleviate some of the problems that stem from standing all day. They should be wide enough for you to move your toes and should have arch support for your foot. Using a shock-absorbing cushioned insole may help make you more comfortable, especially if you work on a cement or metal floor. You should avoid wearing shoes that are completely flat, as this can strain your Achilles tendon, but also avoid high heels that are more than 1 inch tall. Finally, be sure to choose footwear that is safe and appropriate for your work conditions. For more information about footwear do’s and don’ts, consult with a podiatrist today.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Dr. Thomas Tran from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Can I Treat Toenail Fungus at Home?

Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection that can result in the swelling, yellowing, and crumbling of the nail. A weakened immune system, abnormal skin pH levels, moist environments, sweaty socks and shoes, and diabetes can all be contributing factors to the fungus growing. Treatment should begin promptly as the nail can crack or split, and in severe cases the entire toenail could fall off. Some common suggestions for treatment are various at home remedies including different oils and cornmeal. Unfortunately, there is little evidence for the effectiveness of at home remedies. If you have toenail fungus, it is recommended that you speak with a podiatrist. A podiatrist can prescribe effective treatments such as topical antifungal creams, oral antifungal medications, laser treatment or in severe cases, surgery.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Thomas Tran of Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

What Is a Tailor’s Bunion?

A Tailor’s bunion is similar to a regular bunion. However, a Tailor’s bunion forms on the 5th metatarsophalangeal joint (or the “pinky toe”) as opposed to the big toe. A Tailor’s bunion can have a few different causes that include a biomechanical abnormality, heredity, or ill fitting shoes. A biomechanical abnormality can occur when there is too much motion in one part of the foot when stability is needed. Poor fitting shoes that have a limited and pointed toe box can cause a Tailor’s bunion to develop. Some common treatments include orthotics, padding over the painful area, and switching to shoes that are wider, but in severe cases, surgery may be necessary. If you think you might be experiencing a Tailor’s bunion, make sure to consult a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Dr. Thomas Tran of Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Do I Have a Heel Spur?

When a tiny bone growth forms at the bottom of the heel, it is referred to as a heel spur. Heel spurs, which are usually only detected by X-rays, occur when calcium builds up on the heel bone. Common risk factors for heel spurs include issues with biomechanics, unsupportive footwear, and being overweight. Heel spurs are usually characterized by chronic pain where the spur connects to the soft tissue. Pain also occurs when walking or running on hard surfaces, or you may feel a sharp pain when getting out of bed in the morning. When experiencing these symptoms, it is important to consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Some treatment options include changing footwear, stretching, wearing orthotics, and in some cases, having surgery.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact Dr. Thomas Tran from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

If you have any questions feel free to contact our office located in Frisco, TX . We offer the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology to meet your needs.
