People who have diabetes are at an increased risk of having foot problems, such as nerve damage and poor circulation. Other diabetes related foot and ankle problems include infections that won’t heal, charcot foot, nail disorders, hammertoes and bunions. What Is Limb Salvage?

Limb salvage is the attempt of saving a limb, such as the foot from amputation. Podiatrists also try to make sure that there is enough function in the foot after the salvage that it is still usable. Diabetes is the number one cause of non-traumatic amputations in the United States. Those with diabetes experience poor blood circulation, which prevents proper healing of an ulcer. Often times during pregnancy, your feet can bear the brunt of weight gain. Stretching is very important, as well as wearing supportive and comfortable shoes and socks. Feet tend to swell during the day, so having proper shoes is paramount in the afternoon. Walking keeps the blood flowing instead of pooling. Drink lots of water, as this will rid your system of excess sodium, in turn minimizing the swelling. When sitting, if possible, elevate your feet. At night, you should sleep on your left side, because it keeps your kidneys humming along which helps eliminate waste and reduce swelling. Pregnancy and pending motherhood should be a joy. What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

Rare Hair Splinter in the Foot

A type of foot and heel pain may stem from the very rare “hair splinter.” This happens when a hair shaft gets under the skin and creeps deeper into the body. The scientific name for the condition is “cutaneous pili migrans.” It may be confused with a parasite, as it typically has a worm-like shape. The hair splinter has only been recorded in the medical community a few times. In the past 60 years, there have been 26 known cases of cutaneous pili migrans. Once the hair is removed from the body, it appears that the pain stops. Although a severe hair splinter is rare, foot and heel pain is not. Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Is My Toe Broken?

Noticeable symptoms of a broken toe include severe pain, swelling, and bruising. In severe fractures, the bone may protrude from the skin, which can cause it to appear deformed. This ailment can occur if the toe suddenly hits a piece of furniture, or if a heavy object is dropped on it. Some patients can develop a broken toe as a result of a stress fracture. This is caused by repetitive movements or from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. After a proper diagnosis takes place, which typically includes having an X-ray taken, the toe can be taped to the toe next to it. This is referred to as buddy taping.
